Slane History and Archaeology Society Summer Outing to Birr Castle and Gardens

There will be a guided tour of the Gardens,  Science Centre and the Great Telescope in Birr Castle, Co. Offaly on Saturday 11th July.  The Gardens are set on  50 hectares and contain some of the largest and rarest tree species found in the world, while in the Science Centre the astronomical instruments, cameras, and equipment used by the Third and Fourth Earls of Rosse are on view.  The Reflecting Telescope was the largest in the world for over 70 years, and is called Ireland’s  greatest scientific wonder, and a masterpiece of human creative genius.
  Lunch will be in the Thatch, Crinkill, followed by a guided tour of the town of Birr by a local historian.
 The bus will leave the Carpark beside the church, Chapel St., Slane at 8.30 am on Saturday 11th July.
