“Your Locality in the Newspapers(1750-1900) ” is the title of a talk to be given by historian Noel Carolan in which he explores what the newspapers have to say about people, events and places around Slane, Grangegeeth and nearby.
It will take place in the Slane Youth Cafe, Chapel St., Slane, on Thursday 26th April at 8pm.
It is a chance to hear long forgotten reports from the locality. All are welcome
Slane History & Archaeology Society will hold its AGM on Thursday, 22nd March, in the Youth Café at 8pm. [this building is beside the R. C. Church] The election of officers will be followed with a presentation by Frances Lee Gargan entitled “From The Commons to Congress”. We hope you will be free to attend as the title alone of this talk sounds interesting. Discussion will also take place on the programme for next year. Your input and suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Slane History and Archaeology will commence its 2018 activities with a talk by Michael Kelly, on “The Fleming Family” on Thursday 15th Feb. at 8pm in the Youth Café, Slane. All are welcome.
- Cider Tasting and Talk on old Irish furniture:
Mark Jenkinson will be our host in his orchard in Stackallen on Saturday afternoon when he will explain
his cider making and offer us a tasting. He will also give us the history of Irish and local apple trees.
Then he will bring us to see his extensive collection of old locally made furniture.
This tour costs 15 euro per person , we will meet at the carpark, Chapel St., Slane at 2.30pm and you can follow those who know
the way to his orchard.

The Society is pleased to welcome Mairead Crinion who will give a talk entitled “The Search for Guy Somerville Gibney, from Navan to Australia” an amazing story which should be of great interest to all those following their family history and those involved in local history.
The talk will take place in the Slane Youth Café on Chapel St., Slane on Thursday 12th October at 8pm.

The Society is planning their Annual Trip to Fermanagh on Saturday 2nd September.
The bus will leave Slane at 8.30am from the car park in Chapel St., Slane, stopping at the Derragarra Inn in Butlersbridge for coffee, and proceeding to Castle Coole, Co. Fermanagh, with its opulent display of 18th century architecture and furniture.
After having lunch there we will travel on to the Enniskillen Museum where we will hear about the 600 year history of the Maguire family and then on to the Inniskillings Museum which has special relevance to the Society this year, 2017 being the centenary of the Slane poet soldier and patriot Francis Ledwidge.
A meal is planned before we return to Slane.
The trip will cost €35 per person, the meals at your own expense.

As part of the Ledwidge Centenary Celebrations, the Slane History Society are hosting two talks,
The first one is on Tuesday 27th June at 8pm, to be given by well known historian Dr. Daniel Cusack entitled “Ledwidge – A Personal Appraisal”, followed on Thursday 29th June with our Chairperson John Reidys talk “Agriculture in the Ledwidge Era”at 8pm.
The venue for both talks is the Slane Youth Café on Chapel St., Slane.
There is a wonderfully comprehensive programme of events happening in the week starting 22nd June to 1st July- contact The Hub in Slane or the Ledwidge Museum for further details.

On Saturday May 20th, there will be a walk in Drogheda, with guide Brendan Matthews from the Old Drogheda Society.
